A wave of reactions has followed claims on social media that some senior government officials were absent at the burial of a military commander who died in active service.
The allegation surfaced in a post shared by Malam Ahmadu on X. The post stated that “10 governors and the Vice President are in Borno for a wedding”, while they “did not attend the funeral of a General protecting Borno.”
The claim relates to the burial of Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah. He led the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation Hadin Kai. He was among personnel killed during insurgent attacks in Maiduguri on April 15.
Coverage by Channels Television showed armed personnel conducting full military honours for the late officer and other fallen troops. Soldiers stood guard throughout the ceremony.
The situation has stirred debate online. Some commentators questioned the priorities of political leaders at a time of security concerns. Others advised restraint. They noted that official engagements and security arrangements can affect attendance at events of this nature.
There has been no response from the office of the Vice President or from the governors mentioned in the claim as of the time of this report.
Security experts say the reaction highlights how sensitive public perception of leadership remains, especially in areas facing persistent insurgency.
