Survivors of a deadly attack on a mosque in Katsina State have recounted how gunmen stormed their community in the early hours of Tuesday while they were observing Subhi (morning) prayers.

The incident, which occurred in Gidan Mantau a community less than 10 kilometres from Malumfashi town, left scores of worshippers dead and many others injured.

Residents told Daily Trus that at least 23 people lost their lives in the attack. However, the Katsina State Government confirmed 13 deaths with several others receiving treatment for gunshot and machete wounds.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers, armed with sophisticated weapons, surrounded the mosque and opened fire indiscriminately on the worshippers, leaving behind scenes of horror and grief.

The tragic incident came just a day after Governor Dikko Radda proceeded on a three-week medical leave, handing over power to his deputy, Malam Faruk Lawal.
