The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has acknowledged that errors committed by medical personnel caused the death of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre.

The confirmation followed the outcome of an initial investigation directed by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda. The inquiry found that surgical scissors were forgotten inside the patient after a surgical operation.

Samira Suleiman, the Board’s Public Relations Officer, conveyed the development in an official statement.

As part of immediate action, the Board has removed three staff members linked to the surgery from active clinical responsibilities.

The case has also been handed over to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee, which will conduct further examinations and apply disciplinary measures in accordance with professional rules and relevant laws.

“The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathizes with them over this painful loss. We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form,” the statement read.

It was earlier reported that Aishatu Umar lost her life after doctors allegedly left surgical scissors in her stomach during an operation carried out at the government-run Urology Centre.

Her husband, Abubakar Muhammad, had stated that his wife developed serious health complications after the surgery. He added that she passed away despite repeated complaints submitted to hospital officials.

The tragedy has provoked strong reactions across Kano, while many Nigerians have also taken to social media to call for justice and reforms within the healthcare sector.
