Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has obtained the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship nomination form ahead of the 2027 election in Kebbi State.
Malami announced his decision in a statement posted on Saturday through his official Facebook page.
In the statement, the former minister declared what he called a “state of emergency on misgovernance” in Kebbi State. He said the worsening condition of the state compelled him to join the governorship race.
According to him, insecurity, poverty, poor healthcare, and decline in education have continued to affect residents across the state.
Malami alleged that Kebbi is facing serious governance and humanitarian problems. He cited figures relating to out-of-school children, malnutrition, poverty, and limited access to medical services.
He claimed that more than 67 per cent of children between the ages of six and 15 are out of school in the state. He also stated that over 88 per cent of children in Kebbi live in multidimensional poverty.
The former minister further alleged that hundreds of severely malnourished children died within nine months in 2025. He added that maternal mortality and poor healthcare outcomes among children under five remain major concerns, especially in rural communities.
Malami also raised concern over insecurity in several parts of the state. He said repeated attacks by bandits, cases of kidnapping, displacement of farmers, and declining business activities have worsened the situation.
According to him, the challenges point to what he described as misplaced priorities and the failure of critical public sectors.
The ADC governorship aspirant promised to prioritise security, healthcare, education, agriculture, youth empowerment, and reforms in governance if elected governor in 2027.
Malami stated that he joined the race with a commitment to accountability, public service, and sustainable development. He added that the current situation in Kebbi State must change.
He also pledged to work towards making the state safer and more prosperous, while insisting that poor leadership and propaganda should no longer define governance in Kebbi State.
