The Kwara State Government has launched a campaign to mobilize School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) to oversee renovations in public secondary schools. The initiative upgrading targets 898 schools through the World Bank-supported Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project.
The announcement was made at a high-level meeting in Ilorin on Tuesday, where stakeholders were briefed on the project’s implementation strategy. Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, led the session. He said the project aligns with Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s education reform agenda and reflects the administration’s commitment to improving learning environments and expanding access to quality education.
Technical Service Providers have been deployed to work with SBMCs in 111 pilot schools. Half of the contract funds have been released to start work. Of these pilot schools, 56.7% are classified as small grants, while 43.2% as medium grants.
The first phase covers 24 schools in Asa, 25 in Ilorin West, 10 in Offa, 16 in Oyun, and 18 each in Ilorin East and Ilorin South. This phase will serve as a benchmark for expanding the project to other schools across the state.
The AGILE Project, backed by the World Bank and partners, focuses on improving educational infrastructure and learning outcomes, with special attention to adolescent girls. The government plans to include more schools in future phases to broaden the project’s impact.
