A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs Foluke Osafile, has left the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Osafile represents Amuwo-Odofin Constituency-01 in the Assembly and serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Wealth Creation.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the lawmaker confirmed her defection on Saturday while speaking with journalists. She said, “Yes, it is true. I have defected to the ADC.”

Explaining her decision, Osafile stated that the move would allow her to better protect the interests of her constituents and work toward a more promising future for them.

She said, “I pledge my full commitment to working with ADC leaders and stakeholders to advance the cause of good governance and effective representation.

“Together, we will strengthen our democratic institutions and ensure that the voices of ordinary Nigerians are heard and respected.

“To my constituents in Amuwo-Odofin Constituency-01, I reaffirm my unwavering loyalty to you. Your trust remains my guiding principle.”

She further assured residents of her constituency of her continued dedication. “I assure you that this step is taken to serve your interests better and secure a brighter future for our constituency,” she said.

The lawmaker is expected to officially declare her defection on the floor of the Assembly during plenary in the coming days.

Osafile won her seat in the Lagos Assembly during the 2023 elections on the platform of the Labour Party. She defeated the All Progressives Congress candidate, Segun Folorunso, by a wide margin.

The victory was later contested by the APC at the Election Petition Tribunal, which initially ruled in favour of the opposition candidate. Osafile challenged the verdict at the Court of Appeal, where she regained her mandate, thus bringing the legal dispute to a close.
