The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a 52-year-old man after operatives allegedly found 339 wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp inside a vehicle in Kabba, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Naziru Kankarofi, disclosed this during a press briefing held on Tuesday at the command headquarters in Lokoja.
Kankarofi said the arrest took place on May 9, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m. He explained that the operation followed intelligence gathering and stop-and-search activities carried out by police operatives.
According to him, officers attached to the Kabba Area Command intercepted a Honda Pilot Jeep with registration number LSD 456 GE during a routine operation.
The police commissioner identified the driver of the vehicle as Chris Amos, aged 52, while Bilat Joseph was said to be the passenger in the vehicle.
“Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, the operatives discovered 339 wraps of substances reasonably suspected to be Indian hemp concealed inside the vehicle,” he said.
Kankarofi stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects allegedly collected the consignment in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on the instruction of a man identified only as “Alhaji.”
“The suspects further stated that the illicit substance was to be delivered to Yola, Adamawa State,” Kankarofi added.
He said the suspects remain in police custody while investigations continue. The exhibits recovered from the vehicle have also been secured.
The commissioner added that security operatives were making efforts to arrest other members of the network linked to the alleged crime.
Kankarofi described illicit drug trafficking as one of the major drivers of violent crimes in society.
He said, “The command will continue to sustain aggressive operations targeted at dismantling criminal syndicates and preventing the movement of illicit substances through the state.”
The police commissioner also assured residents that the command would continue to protect lives and property through intelligence gathering and collaboration with other security agencies and members of the public.
He commended the Inspector-General of Police and the Kogi State Government for supporting security operations in the state. Kankarofi also praised residents for providing useful information that has assisted police operations.
