The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says it has arrested and repatriated a Chinese national, Xu Qing, who is wanted in China over an alleged Ponzi scheme said to involve more than $245 million.
The police disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid.
According to the statement, the operation was carried out by operatives of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja after Chinese authorities formally requested the suspect’s arrest and extradition.
Placid said Chinese authorities declared Xu Qing wanted in Beijing over allegations linked to large-scale illegal collection of public deposits.
“Investigations revealed that the suspect fled China to Nigeria on 5th November 2024 in an attempt to evade arrest, following which a warrant was issued against him on 12th November 2025 by the Shinan Sub-Bureau of Qingdao Public Security,” the statement reads.
The police spokesperson explained that INTERPOL operatives tracked the suspect through intelligence gathering and surveillance operations before his eventual arrest in Ogun State.
“Acting on intelligence and sustained surveillance operations, operatives of INTERPOL NCB Abuja successfully tracked and arrested the fugitive at a factory located in Olowotedo, Siun Village, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State on 24th April 2026, after which the suspect was repatriated to the People’s Republic of China on 28th April 2026 through bilateral police cooperation arrangements to face prosecution for the offences,” Placid added.
The statement also quoted the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, as reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to international collaboration in the fight against transnational crimes.
The police advised Nigerian businesses and employers to carry out proper background checks through relevant security agencies before entering partnerships or employment arrangements with foreign nationals.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its commitment to combating transnational crime and ensuring that Nigeria does not serve as a safe haven for fugitives,” Placid said.
