The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified that no inmate has been released under the recent Presidential Prerogative of Mercy exercise, as the process is still undergoing a final administrative review.
In a statement on Thursday, the AGF said the exercise, which involves granting clemency to selected inmates, is currently at its final verification stage to ensure that all names and recommendations comply with legal and procedural standards.
Fagbemi explained that the issuance of the official instrument of release, following approval by the Council of State, represents the last step in the process.
According to him, this phase allows the government to conduct a final review “for remedial purposes, if any,” before forwarding the approved list to the Controller-General of Corrections for implementation.
He emphasized that the ongoing verification is a standard procedure aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law.
“There is no delay in the process; it is simply following the law to the letter to ensure that only those duly qualified benefit from the President’s mercy,” Fagbemi stated.
“The rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness.”
The AGF also commended Nigerians for their vigilance and constructive feedback, describing public engagement as vital to strengthening the integrity of national institutions.
He assured that once all legal and administrative checks are concluded, the public will be duly informed of the final outcome.
