The Nigerian Senate has summoned the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to appear before it over the worsening security situation in Kwara South Senatorial District.

The resolution followed a motion raised during Wednesday’s plenary session on the need for a coordinated federal response to the rising cases of banditry, kidnapping, and attacks in parts of the zone.

Lawmakers said the briefing would enable them to assess the government’s strategy in addressing the growing insecurity and protecting lives and property in the area.

The Senate also urged the Federal Government to establish a permanent military base in Kwara South, particularly near the forest belts of Ifelodun Local Government Area, to serve as a rapid response hub against criminal elements operating in the region.

Senators who contributed to the debate expressed concern that the insecurity in the area was affecting farming, local businesses, and social life, calling for urgent intervention to restore peace and stability.
