Former senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Godiya Akwashiki, has died at the age of 52.

Family sources confirmed that Akwashiki passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a hospital in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

The lawmaker was said to have battled a prolonged illness which reportedly worsened after his re-election in 2023. He had undergone medical care in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and India, although the nature of the illness was not publicly disclosed.

Akwashiki was first elected into the Senate in 2019 and secured a second term in 2023 on the platform of the Social Democratic Party. He became the only senator from Nasarawa North to win two consecutive terms since the creation of the state.

Before his time in the National Assembly, he served multiple terms in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he rose to become Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.
