The construction of a new Police Academy facility in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area, Ogun State, has been approved by President Bola Tinubu.
According to a statement released on Monday by his media assistant, Bayo Onanuga, he also authorised a special take-off grant of ₦15 billion for the college.
The Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021’s stipulations were fulfilled by the President’s permission, especially with regard to the Police Academy’s expansion from its Wudil, Kano State, base into several campuses throughout the nation.
The announcement partially stated, “The intervention fund will be sourced from the TetFund 2026 allocation to finance priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodations, and core training assets.”
A high-level consultative meeting comprising the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) recommended that the new campus be located in Erinja.
The discussion took into account the long-term requirements of the Nigerian Police Force, which is currently hiring more men, as well as student intake capacity, funding realities, and academic quality assurance.
It said, “President Tinubu believes the expansion will strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education, and national security.”
The clearance follows an increase in attacks and kidnappings by gunmen and suspected terrorists, which prompted Tinubu to proclaim a national security emergency and request more recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force about five months ago.
The President gave the army and police permission to hire extra people through the proclamation.
He declared that an extra 20,000 police officers will be hired.
Tinubu stated that he had already permitted the security agency to use different National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as training depots and approved the nationwide renovation of police training facilities in a statement he personally signed in November 2025.
In order to debrief them and provide more effective police services when deployed to security-challenged areas of the nation, he believes that the policemen being removed from VIP guard duties should go through “crash training.”
Additionally, in November 2025, Tinubu issued an order for police officers to stop providing VIP security.
