A major resolution to the lingering political crisis in Rivers State has been achieved following a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu brought together key stakeholders.
The meeting involved FCT Minister and former Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike, suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, among other lawmakers.
Sources report that Tinubu personally facilitated the truce aimed at ending months of infighting that began in late 2023—marked by legislative splits, legal battles, and even a state of emergency declaration.
Fubara, who had been removed from office in March due to escalating tensions, and Wike—his former mentor turned rival—have reportedly agreed to “sheathe their swords” and work toward restoring political stability in the oil-rich state.
Details of the agreement remain confidential, though it’s expected to include arrangements for reconciling the assembly and potentially reinstating Fubara’s administration. A spokesperson confirmed the truce signals a fresh phase of dialogue and cooperation.
This diplomatic breakthrough marks another milestone in President Tinubu’s sustained efforts since December 2023 to resolve the Rivers crisis, which saw emergency powers briefly trigger nationwide concern over federal-state relations.
