President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the Federal University of Medical Sciences, Azare, in Bauchi State, in honour of the late elder statesman and renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

The institution will now be known as Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University of Medical Sciences, Azare, according to the announcement.

The President said the decision was taken to recognise the enduring legacy of Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, widely respected for his lifelong commitment to Islamic scholarship, peace, tolerance and national unity. The late cleric was regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential religious leaders, whose teachings and leadership impacted generations across the country and beyond.

Tinubu noted that the renaming reflects the federal government’s resolve to honour distinguished Nigerians who made significant contributions to society, particularly in areas of moral guidance, education and social cohesion.

The Federal University of Medical Sciences, Azare, was established to advance medical education, research and healthcare delivery in Nigeria. With the new name, the institution is expected to continue pursuing its academic mandate while also preserving the values of discipline, service and compassion associated with Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.
