Former United States President Donald Trump has announced that the US military has carried out airstrikes on terrorist hideouts in Nigeria.
Trump made the announcement on Christmas Day, saying the strikes targeted ISIS-affiliated terrorists operating in Sokoto State, in Nigeria’s North-West region. He described the operation as the beginning of more attacks against extremist groups.
According to Trump, the airstrikes were directed at terrorist camps hidden in forest areas of Sokoto. He said the operation was carried out under his authority as Commander-in-Chief and warned that his administration would not tolerate the presence of radical Islamic terrorism.
“In my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS terrorist scum in Northwest Nigeria,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Trump had earlier raised concerns in November 2025 about the killing of Christians in Nigeria’s North-West and North-Central regions. At the time, he warned that the United States would take action against terrorist groups responsible for the violence.
Following those comments, discussions were reportedly held between US and Nigerian authorities, after which both sides announced that agreements had been reached on how to address the security situation.
The US government later announced that the strikes were carried out on Thursday night in forest areas believed to be terrorist strongholds.
Trump added that under his leadership, there would be no safe haven for radical Islamic terrorism anywhere in the world.
