Virgil van Dijk has moved into second place among the highest goal-scoring central defenders in the history of the Premier League after taking his tally to 28 goals, excluding penalties.
The Liverpool captain reached the milestone after finding the net in his side’s 5-2 victory over West Ham United on Saturday.
According to Opta statistics, the only central defender ahead of the Dutch international is former Chelsea captain John Terry, who recorded 41 goals during his career.
Van Dijk, 34, has been a key figure since joining Liverpool from Southampton in 2018. During that period, he has helped the club secure major honours, including the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League.
He will now aim to close the gap on Terry’s record in the coming matches. Attention turns to Liverpool’s next league fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday, where Van Dijk is expected to play a leading role for the side managed by Arne Slot.
