Elon Musk, widely regarded as the world’s richest man, has stirred debate online after sharing his thoughts on the long-running argument that money does not guarantee happiness.
The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive made the remark in a short post on Wednesday, writing, “Whoever said ‘money can’t buy happiness’ really knew what they were talking about.”
The statement quickly went viral, with many people seeing it as a rare moment of personal reflection from one of the wealthiest individuals on the planet. Within hours, the post reportedly gained more than 33 million views and over 245,000 likes, leading to widespread discussions about the emotional limits of wealth.
In Nigeria, some social media users linked Musk’s comment to Adekunle Gold’s 2021 song It Is What It Is, where the singer talks about discovering that financial success does not always bring peace of mind or true fulfillment. Many said the lyrics reflect the same idea Musk appeared to express.
Reactions online were mixed. Some people agreed with Musk, saying that while money can reduce stress and make life more comfortable, it cannot solve emotional problems or guarantee inner peace. One user pointed out that money may not buy happiness but can make tough situations easier to handle.
Others disagreed strongly, arguing that poverty and financial struggles can cause serious emotional and mental stress. They said having enough money to meet basic needs would greatly improve their happiness and quality of life.
Some commenters also questioned Musk’s position, noting that his extreme wealth puts him in a very different situation from most people. A few said that even a small portion of his fortune would be life-changing for them.
There were also faith-based reactions, with some users saying that real happiness and fulfillment come from spiritual values and purpose, not from material possessions.
