Nigerian rapper Zlatan Ibile has opened up about the skepticism his parents expressed when he gifted them a luxury home in Lekki, Lagos, in 2019. Speaking on the YACN podcast, the Zanku crooner explained that his parents questioned the source of his sudden wealth, doubting that his music career alone could afford such an expensive property.
Zlatan recalled calling his parents to inform them about the gift, only to be met with disbelief. “I bought my first house in Lekki and decided to give it to my parents. When I told them, they said, ‘A house? That’s not possible. Are you doing something else apart from music? How did you buy a house worth millions in just one year?’” he said.
According to him, his parents requested time to pray and investigate the legitimacy of the gift. They feared he might have been involved in illicit activities, given the speed at which he acquired wealth. Zlatan admitted he felt hurt by their suspicion, especially since he had prioritized them with the gesture.
To ease their concerns, he presented evidence of his music earnings, including his bank statements, to prove that his success came solely from his artistry. The rapper emphasized that his rise in 2019 was the result of hard work and the popularity of his music, not questionable dealings.
His revelation highlights the challenges many young entertainers face when their sudden success raises doubts among family members and society. Zlatan’s story reflects both the cultural importance of parental approval and the scrutiny that often accompanies rapid financial growth in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
