The Kwankwasiyya movement has announced that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso will officially leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party to join the African Democratic Congress on Monday.
According to the group, the defection ceremony will take place in Kano. It is expected that several members of the NNPP will accompany the former Kano State governor as political alignments begin ahead of the 2027 general election.
The development follows a recent visit by Rauf Aregbesola, who now serves as the national secretary of the ADC. He met Kwankwaso at his residence in Abuja. Kwankwaso later acknowledged the visit on his X account, although he did not reveal what was discussed.
Talks about a possible defection had already gained attention days earlier. This happened during the annual Kwankwasiyya Eid gathering in Kano. At the event, supporters repeatedly chanted the name of Peter Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last election.
Both Kwankwaso and Obi responded to the cheers and addressed the crowd briefly during the celebration.
Monday’s move is expected to mark Kwankwaso’s departure from the NNPP, a platform he helped to build, and signal the beginning of a new political phase as preparations intensify for the next general election cycle.
