Chelsea Football Club and head coach Enzo Maresca have mutually agreed to part ways, the club announced on Thursday.

During his tenure, Maresca led the Blues to victory in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup, accomplishments the club described as “an important part of Chelsea’s recent history.”

A statement on Chelsea’s website on Thursday said the decision was taken with the team’s ongoing ambitions in mind.

The statement read, “During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club.

“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions, including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.”

The club extended well-wishes to Maresca, thanking him for his contributions.

The separation follows weeks of speculation over Maresca’s future after reports emerged that he was considering stepping down from the role amid growing internal tensions.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the Italian coach was unhappy with what he viewed as constant interference from the club’s hierarchy, particularly in recruitment matters and squad planning.

Those disagreements were said to have deepened following a poor run of league results that saw Chelsea drift away from the top four places, despite remaining active in multiple competitions.

Sources had also pointed to frustrations over team selection decisions, player management and the club’s long-term sporting vision, issues that reportedly strained relations behind the scenes.

Although Maresca enjoyed success in cup competitions, concerns over Chelsea’s league form and overall performances continued to mount, increasing pressure on both the coach and the club’s leadership.

Those issues reportedly strained relations behind the scenes and raised doubts about his ability to continue in the role.
