The Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) has lodged an official complaint with FIFA after thousands of DR Congo supporters risk being excluded from the 2026 World Cup due to US travel restrictions.
The restrictions, imposed by American authorities in response to the Ebola outbreak, have left many Congolese fans unable to secure entry into the United States. With the tournament only days away, the issue has sparked frustration among supporters who had already purchased tickets.
FECOFA president Véron Mosengo-Omba raised the matter directly with FIFA during a videoconference. He requested that the governing body consider refunding tickets bought under the PMA (Participating Member Association) allocation, which is reserved for fans of qualified national teams.
Ordinarily, FIFA’s ticketing rules only allow resale through its official platform. However, sources close to the discussions say the organization is reviewing FECOFA’s request as an exceptional case. If approved, it would mark a rare deviation from standard procedure, acknowledging the unique circumstances facing Congolese fans.
The situation highlights the wider challenges of hosting a global tournament amid health and security concerns. For DR Congo, whose qualification sparked nationwide celebrations, the possibility of supporters being absent from stadiums in the US is a bitter blow. Fans see their presence as vital to boosting the team’s morale on football’s biggest stage.
Beyond the immediate ticketing dispute, the case raises questions about how FIFA and host nations balance public health measures with inclusivity. While the US government insists the restrictions are necessary to protect citizens, critics argue the policy unfairly penalizes ordinary football fans who pose no threat.
For now, Congolese supporters remain in limbo, waiting for FIFA’s decision. If refunds are granted, many will still miss the chance to witness their team live, but at least they would recover the money spent. If denied, frustration could deepen, adding pressure on both FIFA and US authorities to find a compromise.
The complaint underscores the emotional and financial stakes tied to the World Cup. For DR Congo, participation in the 2026 tournament is historic. Yet without their fans in the stands, the achievement risks being overshadowed by disappointment off the pitch.
