Everton have dismissed women’s team manager Brian Sørensen, with the club sitting ninth in the Women’s Super League despite securing their first home win of the season on Sunday. The 45-year-old Dane, who took charge in 2022, departs alongside assistant coaches Stephen Neligan and Ashley Tootle.

Chief executive Angus Kinnear said the decision was made to “ensure the progression on the pitch we are all striving for,” noting that while Sunday’s victory at Goodison Park was significant, a change of direction was deemed necessary.

Sørensen guided Everton to sixth place in his debut season, followed by back-to-back eighth-place finishes. His tenure brought stability after the short-lived reign of Jean-Luc Vasseur, but six consecutive home league defeats this season — after Goodison became the women’s permanent home — fueled discontent among fans.

Academy coach Scott Phelan, a former England youth international and Everton product, will take interim charge for the remainder of the campaign, assisted by Jennifer Foster and goalkeeping coach Ian McCaldon. Phelan’s first test comes against London City Lionesses on Sunday, followed by a crucial relegation battle against West Ham at Goodison Park.
