China Suspends Marathon Official For Blocking Winner At Finish Line

China has suspended a marathon referee for one year after he mistakenly blocked the eventual winner of the Chongqing Wanzhou Marathon at the finish line, an incident that has drawn widespread criticism and sparked debate about race management standards in the country.

The marathon, held on March 16, 2026, was marred by controversy when runner Sheng Xueli, who had led the race with a commanding margin, was obstructed by an official just meters before the finish line. Video footage showed the referee, clad in a raincoat, stepping forward with arms outstretched to divert Sheng into the wrong lane. The confusion reportedly stemmed from the official mistaking Sheng for a half-marathon competitor due to poor visibility caused by rain and fogged glasses.

Despite the disruption, Sheng was eventually guided back to the correct lane and symbolically crossed the finish line. His official time was recorded at 2 hours, 23 minutes, and 52 seconds, securing his victory. However, the incident overshadowed his achievement and quickly went viral online.

Local athletics authorities moved swiftly to address the controversy. In a statement, organizers admitted the error and described it as a “serious breach of race management.” The referee responsible has been suspended for one year, with officials calling for “deep self-reflection” and promising to strengthen training and oversight of race staff.

The marathon committee also emphasized that Sheng’s victory remains valid and that his performance was not compromised in terms of official recognition. To preserve the integrity of the event, organizers staged a commemorative finish photo for Sheng, allowing him to raise his arms in triumph despite the earlier mishap.

The incident sparked outrage across Chinese social media platforms, where the video was widely shared. Many users expressed disbelief that such an error could occur at a professional marathon, with some calling it “embarrassing” and “unacceptable.” Others sympathized with Sheng, praising his composure and resilience in the face of the disruption.

Athletes and commentators have also weighed in, noting that the incident highlights the importance of clear protocols and professional officiating in competitive sports. Some argued that the suspension was necessary to restore public confidence, while others suggested that broader reforms are needed to prevent similar mistakes in the future.

The suspension underscores the challenges facing China’s growing marathon scene, which has expanded rapidly in recent years. With more international attention on Chinese athletics, incidents like this raise questions about organizational standards and the preparedness of officials.

For athletes, the episode serves as a reminder of the critical role referees play in ensuring fair competition. For organizers, it is a wake-up call to improve training, communication, and race-day management.

While Sheng Xueli’s victory remains intact, the Chongqing Wanzhou Marathon will be remembered less for his performance and more for the officiating blunder that nearly cost him his triumph. The suspension of the referee is both a disciplinary measure and a symbolic step toward restoring credibility in Chinese marathon events.
