The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has announced that it will adopt consensus-based primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections. The decision was reached during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at its national secretariat in Abuja.
National Chairman Yabagi Sani explained that the move aligns with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He emphasized that the party’s candidate selection process would be transparent and aimed at producing credible and electable individuals.
“As we look ahead to the 2027 general elections, we must be guided by the law and INEC regulations. Our approach is clear, lawful, and strategic. We shall conduct consensus-based primaries in full compliance with the law. We are preparing not just to participate in elections, but to win responsibly and govern effectively,” Sani stated.
He cautioned members against division and indiscipline, stressing that unity and loyalty to the party must take precedence over personal ambition. According to him, discipline and mutual respect will be critical as the party prepares for its national convention, primaries, and campaigns.
Sani highlighted ongoing efforts to reposition the ADP as a stronger political force. He noted that the party has expanded its membership base across states and wards, while also digitizing internal processes through an online portal to enhance transparency and accessibility. He described the ADP as a credible alternative that Nigerians have been waiting for, pointing to the country’s current challenges of economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and declining public trust in governance.
“We believe Nigeria can work—and we are prepared to make it work. Over the past months, we have taken deliberate steps to reposition our party as a disciplined and forward-looking platform. We have strengthened our structures, expanded membership, and digitized our processes to ensure inclusiveness,” he added.
The ADP leadership reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying preparations for the 2027 elections. Plans are underway for the party’s national convention, where consensus primaries will be conducted to select candidates for various offices.
Stakeholders within the party expressed optimism that the consensus approach would reduce internal conflicts and foster unity. They believe the strategy will help the ADP present a united front during campaigns and improve its chances at the polls.
The decision reflects a broader trend among political parties in Nigeria to adopt mechanisms that minimize disputes during primaries. By emphasizing consensus, the ADP aims to balance inclusiveness with stability, ensuring that candidates emerge through collective agreement rather than divisive contests.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, the ADP’s strategy underscores its ambition to position itself as a viable alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape. The party’s leadership insists that discipline, transparency, and unity will be central to its preparations, while its reforms are designed to strengthen credibility and public trust.
With consensus primaries now officially adopted, the ADP has set the stage for its next phase of political engagement. The coming months will reveal how effectively the party can translate its internal reforms into electoral success and whether its promise of responsible governance resonates with voters.
