Chelsea captain and former England international Millie Bright has announced her immediate retirement from professional football, closing the chapter on a career that spanned more than a decade and brought her 20 major trophies. The decision follows her earlier retirement from international duty this season, marking the end of an era for one of the most decorated players in women’s football.

Bright, who joined Chelsea from Doncaster Rovers Belles in late 2014 as a promising 21-year-old, quickly established herself as a cornerstone of Emma Hayes’ squad. Within a year of her arrival, she helped the Blues secure their first FA Cup and Women’s Super League (WSL) title, setting the stage for a period of dominance in English women’s football. Over the next 12 years, Bright became synonymous with Chelsea’s success, winning eight WSL titles and becoming the league’s record appearance holder.

Her influence was particularly evident between 2020 and 2025, when Chelsea captured six consecutive league titles and seven domestic cups, reaching three additional finals. Bright played a pivotal role in the club’s first Women’s Champions League final and their historic treble-winning campaign, which included an unbeaten domestic season. Her performances earned her four nominations to the PFA Team of the Year and two selections to the FIFPRO World XI, cementing her reputation as one of the finest defenders of her generation.

This season, however, proved more challenging. Chelsea’s defensive depth increased with the arrival of Naomi Girma, the emergence of young talent Veerle Buurman, and the return of Kadeisha Buchanan from a long-term injury. Bright also struggled with an ankle injury, forcing her off during a match against Tottenham in February. That game, her 314th appearance for Chelsea, ultimately became her last.

In announcing her retirement, Bright expressed deep gratitude to the club and its supporters. “Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I’m now ready to say goodbye to playing football. I’ve given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge. It is now time, and I’m ready to go into a new era. I’m always going to be Chelsea, but just in a different way,” she said.

Bright will remain closely connected to the club, taking on roles as a trustee of the Chelsea Foundation and as a club ambassador. The foundation role will allow her to continue her work supporting communities, while her ambassadorial duties will ensure she remains a visible figure representing Chelsea off the pitch.

In an open letter to fans, Bright reflected on her journey: “This club means everything to me. Chelsea has been the reason for getting up every single day and pushing through the hard times to get back to the good times. I owe everything to this club—the people I’ve met, the friends I’ve made, and of course, the memories. I never expected to be a footballer, let alone play for one of the biggest clubs in the world and lift all those trophies together.”

Chelsea will honour Bright’s contributions at their final WSL fixture of the season against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on May 16. The celebration will highlight her legacy as a leader and role model who helped shape the club’s modern era of success.

Her achievements extend beyond club football. Bright earned 88 caps for England, playing a central role in the Lionesses’ triumph at the 2022 European Championship. While she retired from international duty earlier this season, the Football Association has confirmed that she will be formally celebrated at a future home game. England manager Sarina Wiegman praised Bright’s impact, saying: “We look forward to welcoming her to a home game in the near future and recognising her outstanding contribution to the sport. I wish her all the very best for what comes next.”

Bright’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable career defined by resilience, leadership, and success. As she transitions into her new roles, her influence on Chelsea and women’s football more broadly is set to continue, ensuring her legacy endures well beyond her playing days.
