Nigerian singer and songwriter Johnny Drille has opened up about facing criticism from the Christian community for performing in churches.
Speaking on the CreativiTEA podcast, the Mavin Records artist explained that although he loves God and remains active in church, his music is not strictly for church audiences.
“I love God and I’m very much involved in church, but I never really felt my music was for church. Sometimes I get invited to perform in churches, which is quite interesting,” he said.
Johnny Drille revealed that some Christians often criticize him when he performs in religious settings, but he believes his songs carry positive and meaningful messages.
“I’ve gotten backlash from the Christian community whenever I perform in churches. But the truth is, my music spreads positivity. It talks about real-life issues that the church sometimes avoids,” he added.
The singer also pointed out that the church tends to avoid open conversations about love — a theme he considers both important and spiritual.
“The church shies away from talking about love. You go to Christian weddings and hear Davido or Wizkid songs. What if the church decides to start creating their own love songs?” he said.
