The fragile peace within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is once again under threat as a fresh crisis brews over zoning arrangements in the South ahead of the party’s elective national convention.
The convention, scheduled to hold on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, will produce a new National Working Committee (NWC) to replace the current team led by Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.
At its 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in July, the party had unanimously chosen Ibadan as the venue for the exercise. However, disagreements have resurfaced among southern leaders over how key positions should be zoned, sparking renewed tension within the ranks.
Party insiders say the zoning dispute, if not swiftly resolved, could deepen existing divisions and undermine preparations for the convention, which is seen as critical to repositioning the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development has raised fresh concerns among stakeholders that the PDP’s internal wrangling could weaken its ability to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
