Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has alleged that state governors are reluctant to join the emerging political coalition due to fear of intimidation from the Federal Government.
Abdullahi made the disclosure on Saturday during the third plenary session of the Northern Political Consultative Group (NPCG), held in Abuja.
According to him, “We have credible information that some governors are genuinely interested in supporting our coalition efforts, but they are being held back by sustained threats and pressure from the central government. This fear is real and must be addressed if we are to build a truly democratic and inclusive future for Nigeria.”
The ADC spokesperson did not mention names but insisted that political repression and arm-twisting tactics were undermining Nigeria’s democratic space. He called on civil society, elder statesmen, and the international community to closely monitor the situation as the country heads into the 2027 general elections.
Abdullahi also reassured party members and Nigerians that the ADC remains committed to offering an alternative platform focused on equity, accountability, and national development. He said the coalition was gaining traction across the country despite the challenges.
The NPCG plenary, attended by politicians, academics, and representatives from various socio-political groups, also discussed insecurity, the economy, and the need for a northern consensus on national development.
The event marks yet another chapter in the ADC’s push to consolidate its place as a major contender ahead of 2027, even as concerns grow over political interference and shrinking democratic space.
