Nigerian music producer and record label boss, Don Jazzy, has revealed that he almost gave up on music after his former label, Mo’Hits Records, broke up in 2012.
Speaking in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Don Jazzy said the sudden end of Mo’Hits, which he co-founded with D’banj, left him deeply discouraged and thinking about moving abroad.
He explained that it was the encouragement from his close friends that made him decide to stay in Nigeria and start again, which led to the birth of Mavin Records.
“When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” he said.
Don Jazzy described the experience as a tough but life-changing period that made him stronger and more resilient.
After Mo’Hits dissolved, Don Jazzy went on to establish Mavin Records, which initially signed both former Mo’Hits artists like Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince, as well as new talents such as Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, and Di’ja.
Today, Mavin has grown into one of Africa’s biggest music labels, with stars like Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, Johnny Drille, and DJ Big N.
In 2024, the label reached a new milestone when Universal Music Group (UMG) acquired a majority stake in Mavin Global, boosting its global reach and expansion.
