Nigerian singer Oludipe David, popularly known as Spyro, has revealed that he once believed he would die poor due to his lifelong fear of failure.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Frank Edoho, Spyro shared that his struggles began in childhood as a result of his father’s harsh words. He explained that his father often used negative language while correcting him, which made him internalize fear and self-doubt.
“I thought I was going to die broke. I always had this fear of failure. And my dad contributed to that. He took every opportunity he got to always tell me that I am a failure,” the singer said.
Spyro recalled struggling with poor grades in secondary school and doubting his ability to complete his university education because of the psychological impact of fear and low self-esteem.
He said he eventually overcame his fears after developing a close relationship with God.
The “Who Is Your Guy” crooner revealed that before his breakthrough, he had almost abandoned music and started a career in interior design. His 2022 hit song “Who Is Your Guy” changed his life, and the remix featuring Tiwa Savage in 2023 solidified his fame.
Later that year, the song won Best Collaboration at the 16th Headies Awards, marking a major turning point in his career.
