Kaffy Shafau has opened up about why her marriage ended, admitting she was not fully prepared for what marriage truly requires.

The popular dancer, who divorced her husband in January 2022, shared her experience during a conversation with Chude Jideonwo.

Kaffy explained that many people enter marriage without proper understanding, including herself, noting that the guidance they receive while growing up is often not enough.

She stressed that marriage should be treated as something that requires proper education and preparation, not something people rush into.

“I was not educated enough for marriage and a lot of us aren’t, our parents are not preparing us enough, living through their eyes is not enough education about marriage,” she said.

She added that marriage plays a major role in shaping society, yet it is often taken too lightly compared to other important life processes.

“It is a special course that needs to be taken, we can’t have a society that issues you marriage certificate easier than driver’s license. It’s harder to get the driver’s license but it’s much easier to get a marriage certificate, but it’s inside this home that all the ills of the society are being built,” she said.

Kaffy also called for deeper evaluation before people get married, including mental and emotional assessments.

“There’s a lot of mental health situations and assessments that needs to go on. It’s not only counselling that they should do. They should do mental evaluation of the couple,” she added.

She further suggested stricter requirements before marriage, including structured learning and testing.

“It should be a mandatory requirement that drug test, mental evaluation, couples therapy, all of these things. There need to be a one-year programme of human behavioural sciences that they need to go through before two people come and damage another human being that they would bring to life,” she said.
