The fashion world is in mourning as legendary Italian designer Valentino Garavani has passed away. He died on Monday, January 19, 2025, at his residence in Rome, surrounded by loved ones. Tributes and condolences have since flooded in from fans, fellow designers, and fashion enthusiasts worldwide.
Valentino’s lying in state will be held at Piazza Mignanelli on Wednesday, January 21, and Thursday, January 22, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. His funeral service will take place on Friday, January 23, at 11 a.m., at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, Piazza della Repubblica 8, Rome.
Valentino Garavani was born on May 11, 1932, in Voghera, Lombardy, Italy. From a young age, he showed a passion for fashion, apprenticing under his aunt Rosa and local designer Ernestina Salvadeo. At 17, he moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts and Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, refining his skills under designers Jean Dessés and Guy Laroche.
In 1960, Valentino opened his eponymous fashion house in Rome and made his international debut in Florence in 1962. He became renowned for his exquisite gowns, signature red color, and ultra-feminine designs, leaving an indelible mark on haute couture.
The circumstances surrounding his death have not been disclosed, but his legacy in fashion is immortal.
