Manchester City are now in pole position to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, with the 23-year-old showing preference for a move to Etihad Stadium over rivals Manchester United.
Forest expect Anderson to depart this summer, though no agreement has been reached. Negotiations remain difficult, with City and Forest far apart on valuation. United, meanwhile, have signaled they will not enter a bidding war or lengthy talks.
The potential fee could break records for a British player, surpassing the £105 million Arsenal paid West Ham for Declan Rice in 2023. Forest believe Anderson’s strong World Cup showing with England could further boost his market value.
Manager Vitor Pereira praised Anderson and teammate Morgan Gibbs-White after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, saying both deserve “the top of the world.” He admitted he wants to keep his best players but acknowledged the market may dictate otherwise. Forest’s lack of European football next season, after finishing 16th in the Premier League, increases the likelihood of Anderson’s exit.
Anderson joined Forest from Newcastle in 2024 for £35 million. Since then, he has made 92 appearances and scored six goals. His performance in the 2025 European U21 Championship, where he helped England lift the trophy, raised his profile further. Sunday’s match marked his 50th appearance of the season, and he received a standing ovation when substituted.
City’s pursuit reflects their intent to strengthen midfield options, while United remain cautious about overspending. The transfer saga is expected to dominate headlines as the summer window approaches, with Anderson’s future set to shape Forest’s rebuild and City’s ambitions.
