Netanyahu seeks U.S. Briefing on Iran talks amid fears of potential U.S. Concession on sanctions and Israel’s security in the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pressed U.S. Officials for clarification on Wednesday on U.S. Negotiations with Iran to keep his finger on the pulse and discuss what he says are Israeli security concerns regarding the potential for concessions, specifically on lifting sanctions.
An Israeli official, who was briefed on the discussions but declined to be identified, said Netanyahu asked about the status of the negotiations and for information on what specific proposals are on the table. Israel is concerned that the U.S. Will make last-minute concessions to secure a deal with Iran to de-escalate regional hostilities, the official said.
A U.S. Official confirmed that Netanyahu communicates with U.S. Officials regularly regarding the negotiations. CNN reached out to the White House for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
The United States has already made “red lines” clear regarding what it considers unacceptable, according to Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday: Iran would not be able to develop nuclear weapons under any circumstance, have a missile system targeting the U.S., or have the ability to proliferate nuclear material to other states.
But concerns in Israel include the possibility of the lifting of economic sanctions on Iran. Jerusalem also wants constraints on Iran’s proxy network and its ballistic missile program, while still maintaining Israeli military freedom of action.
