Legendary Nigerian singer Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has shared his views on why some artists are labelled as “wack” in the music industry, saying the idea is misguided.

Speaking in a video broadcast, the African Queen crooner stated that there is no such thing as a wack artist. According to him, every song is created with a purpose and designed to appeal to a particular audience.

2Baba explained that music is meant to evoke emotions and create a certain feeling, and that success is not always determined by talent alone. He noted that many artists often criticised for lacking talent end up being more commercially successful because they understand how to market their music.

He said, “Every music is tailor-made to evoke an emotion, to create a spirit. There is nothing like a wack artiste. That is why many of the so-called wack artists are more bankable than the talented ones. Because they understand that it is not the art itself, it is the marketing of that art.”

The veteran singer added that no matter how talented an artist is or how good a song sounds, it is impossible to please everyone. He stressed that music appreciation is subjective and depends on personal taste.

“No matter how talented you are or how sweet your music is, there is no music that everybody likes,” he said. “Everything is narrowed down to the marketing, promotion and the business. It is only those who resonate with your music that will like it naturally.”

2Baba concluded by emphasising that acceptance in the music industry is largely driven by promotion, marketing strategies, and understanding the business side of music, not just raw talent.
