One term as president is enough to make a difference — Peter Obi

In a bold reaffirmation of his political philosophy, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has declared that his vow to serve only one term of four years if elected president in 2027, remains “sacrosanct.”

In a detailed public statement titled “My One-Term, Four-Year Vow Is Sacrosanct”, Obi invoked the legacy of global statesmen such as Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela to drive home the point that true leadership is defined not by the length of time in office, but by purposeful and accountable service.

“Longevity in office is not a mark of success,” Obi said. “Rather, it is purposeful, accountable service — however brief — that defines true statesmanship.”

Obi’s statement comes in response to growing scepticism over his repeated pledge to serve for only one term. In recent weeks, some critics had dismissed the vow as political rhetoric. One unnamed political actor was quoted as saying, “Even if he swore by a shrine, I still wouldn’t believe him.” Another dismissed such a vow as delusional, suggesting the speaker “needs psychiatric evaluation.”

“They are judging me by their own standards — where political promises are made to be broken. But they forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth.”

Referencing his record as former governor of Anambra State, Obi stated that his governance history is marked by measurable achievements and fulfilled promises, including improvements in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and prudent management of public funds.

“In my political life, my word is my bond,” he emphasized.

Obi’s reference to Mandela’s one-term presidency in South Africa was especially symbolic. He praised Mandela for choosing principle over power, saying it was “a deliberate act of leadership” and a reminder that power must serve the people, not the self.

Drawing parallels to the Nigerian context, Obi said the country must begin to rebuild trust between leaders and citizens — trust that has long been eroded by broken promises and political opportunism.

“We must rebuild trust in our country. I have dedicated my public life to demonstrating that leadership with integrity is not a myth,” Obi said.

Obi maintained that 48 months is more than sufficient for any serious leader to implement transformational policies.
