The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that five worshippers were killed during a prayer session on a mosque in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Dadin Kowa community, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, Bashir Usman.
He said suspected members of the Lakurawa group carried out the assault during Taraweeh prayers. The police described the attack as a reprisal. Five people lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries. The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Usman explained that the attackers fled into the bush before security personnel arrived at the scene. He added that police operatives were deployed immediately. The team worked with the military and local vigilantes to restore calm and maintain order in the area.
The command expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and residents of Maiyama over the incident.
Residents linked the attack to recent operations against the group’s hideouts and a failed ambush targeting a military commander’s convoy in the area.
The latest violence comes days after suspected Lakurawa fighters carried out attacks in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State, where many residents were reportedly killed.
