The ongoing feud between Nigerian musician Seun Kuti and superstar singer Wizkid has taken a new turn after Seun openly criticised Wizkid for having a tattoo of his late father, Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, on his arm.
Speaking during an Instagram live session, Seun Kuti told Wizkid to remove the tattoo, insisting that it was inappropriate. He went further to suggest that Wizkid should replace the image of Fela with a tattoo of his own father instead.
Seun warned that keeping the tattoo could negatively affect Wizkid’s future, claiming it could block his ability to achieve greater success.
“Remove my father’s tattoo from your arm and replace it with your father’s head. If you don’t do it, you will never use your hands to do great things in life,” Seun said.
The disagreement between the two artistes began after Seun rejected comparisons between Wizkid and Fela, arguing that such claims diminish his father’s legacy. According to him, Fela’s influence cannot be measured by music success alone, as he was also a powerful political and cultural activist who challenged oppression and fought for social justice.
Seun has also criticised Wizkid’s fans for constantly bringing Fela into online debates, describing their actions as disrespectful. He stated that equating modern-day commercial success with Fela’s historical impact shows a lack of understanding of history.
While acknowledging Wizkid’s achievements as a successful artiste, Seun questioned why people feel the need to describe him as greater than Fela. He also raised concerns about Wizkid’s use of the nickname “Big Bird,” claiming it was originally associated with him and should not be copied.
In response to the controversy, Wizkid took to Instagram to share his own view. The singer stated that he rejects comparisons with Fela but believes he is bigger in terms of modern success and global reach.
