Six Lawmakers Defect As Party Realignments Reshape Nigeria’s House Of Representatives

The House of Representatives recorded another round of defections on Wednesday, with six lawmakers abandoning their parties to join new platforms. The development highlights intensifying political realignments as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
NNPP Lawmakers Move to ADC

During plenary presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, four members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) from Kano State announced their defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The lawmakers—Adamu Wakili (Minjibir/Ungogo Federal Constituency), Umar Zakari, Umar Datti, and Abdulhakeem Ado—explained that persistent internal crises within the NNPP forced their decision. Wakili, who led the group, stated in his resignation letter that leadership disputes had made it impossible to remain in the party. “I find it imperative to align with a platform that guarantees inclusion,” he wrote.

The defectors pointed to prolonged divisions at both state and national levels, stressing that the NNPP’s inability to resolve disputes had weakened its structure and credibility.
PDP Members Join APC

In separate announcements, two lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also defected. Ahmadu Kabiru of Zamfara State declared his move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Chinedu Martins of Imo State followed suit, noting that he had already aligned with the APC at the ward level since March 2026.

Their decisions further strengthen the APC’s majority in the House and reflect the party’s growing influence across different regions.

The defections have reshaped the numerical balance in the House of Representatives. The APC now holds 282 seats, maintaining its dominant majority. The PDP has been reduced to 30 seats, while the ADC has increased its presence to 24.

Other parties retain smaller numbers: Labour Party has 10 seats, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) five, Accord Party four, and both the Action Peoples Party (APP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) two each. The NNPP, once seen as a rising force, has been reduced to a single seat following the latest exits.

This week’s defections follow earlier movements, signaling a broader trend of repositioning ahead of the 2027 elections. Internal disputes, particularly within the NNPP, have accelerated the pace of realignment.

For the ADC, the arrival of four lawmakers from Kano strengthens its foothold in northern Nigeria and enhances its visibility as an alternative platform. For the APC, the addition of two PDP defectors consolidates its majority and reinforces its influence nationwide.

The PDP, already weakened by electoral setbacks and internal divisions, faces further erosion of its parliamentary strength. The NNPP’s collapse in representation underscores the risks of unresolved leadership disputes and factionalism.

Defections are a familiar feature of Nigeria’s political landscape. Lawmakers often reposition themselves ahead of elections to align with parties offering stronger prospects for inclusion, influence, or electoral success.

The latest moves reflect both strategic calculations and frustration with party leadership. For defectors, joining new platforms is seen as a way to secure relevance in an evolving political environment.

While the defections strengthen the APC and ADC, they also raise questions about party stability and cohesion. The APC’s majority ensures legislative dominance, but the growing presence of smaller parties like the ADC suggests that alternative platforms are gaining traction.

Observers note that these shifts could influence political negotiations and alliances ahead of the 2027 elections. With the NNPP nearly erased from parliamentary representation, its future role in national politics remains uncertain.

The PDP, though still present, faces the challenge of rebuilding credibility and retaining members. Its reduced numbers highlight the urgency of internal reforms if it hopes to remain competitive.

The latest defections in the House of Representatives illustrate the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political system. Six lawmakers—four from the NNPP and two from the PDP—have shifted allegiance to the ADC and APC, reshaping party standings and reinforcing the dominance of the ruling party.

As the 2027 elections approach, these moves signal intensifying realignments and underscore the importance of party cohesion. For Nigeria’s democracy, the defections serve as a reminder that alliances remain dynamic, shaped by internal disputes, strategic ambitions, and the search for political survival.
