Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has revealed that she initially disliked one of Mavin Records’ biggest hits, “Dorobucci,” when she first heard it.
Speaking in an interview with NotJustOk, the singer recalled that Don Jazzy played an early version of the track while they were in a hotel in Dubai during her wedding, but she wasn’t impressed at all.
“Don’t know if people know this, but Don Jazzy played ‘Dorobucci’ in the hotel when we were in Dubai for my wedding, and honestly, I thought it was such a crap song,” she said.
However, Tiwa said her opinion changed completely after she returned to Nigeria and heard the finished version of the track in the studio.
“When I got back to Nigeria and I got to the studio, I was shocked. I was so angry because this had happened with ‘Eminado’ too — I didn’t like that song at first either,” she revealed.
The “Somebody’s Son” hitmaker added that she was the last Mavin artist to record her verse because she wasn’t sure about the song’s appeal at the time.
“I was the last person to record my verse because I was looking at everybody like, ‘Do you guys really like this?’” Tiwa recounted.
Despite her initial hesitation, “Dorobucci” went on to become one of Mavin Records’ biggest hits, dominating airwaves across Africa and showcasing the label’s creative brilliance.
Reflecting on its success, Tiwa praised Don Jazzy’s vision and production talent, saying, “We all know what happened to that record. I don’t know what Don Jazzy does, but it turned out phenomenal. Shoutout to Don Jazzy.”
