An FCT High Court has remanded a 40-year-old University of Abuja law student, Monday Goodluck, in Kuje Correctional Facility over allegations of raping a 100-level Medicine and Surgery student.
Justice M.S. Idris gave the order on Wednesday after rejecting an oral bail application filed by the defendant’s counsel, Mr. Samson Francis.
The judge directed the defence lawyer to submit a formal written bail application and ensure that it is served to the prosecution.
Justice Idris subsequently adjourned the case until June 9 for further hearing.
Goodluck was arraigned by the police on a two-count charge bordering on alleged rape and causing physical injury.
According to the prosecution counsel, Alexander Agbo, the defendant allegedly sexually assaulted the medical student at his residence.
The prosecution further alleged that the defendant deceived the victim by claiming he had connections that could help her secure approval for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND.
Agbo stated that the alleged incident happened around 11 p.m. on March 25 at the defendant’s residence.
The prosecutor said the offence is punishable under Section 1 (1) and (2) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.
The prosecution also accused the defendant of causing physical injury and instilling fear in the victim by allegedly forcing his fingers into her mouth to stop her from screaming.
According to Agbo, the offence is punishable under Section 2 (1) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2025.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against him.
