A part-time student of the University of Benin, popularly known as UNIBEN, has reportedly been shot dead inside his vehicle near the main gate of the institution’s Ugbowo campus.
The incident happened on Sunday under circumstances that are still unclear.
A video circulating online showed the aftermath of the attack, although authorities are yet to officially confirm details surrounding the killing.
Reports claimed that the victim had just finished writing his semester examinations before he was attacked, but this has not been verified by the university management.
Reacting to the incident, the University of Benin stated that the killing did not occur within the school premises and suggested that it could be connected to suspected cult-related activities outside the campus environment.
The institution also expressed sadness over the development and advised students and staff members to remain calm, vigilant, and security conscious while carrying on with their academic activities peacefully.
The university further assured members of the school community of its commitment to maintaining safety and security within the campus.
As of the time this report was filed, the Edo State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the incident.
