A University of Jos student, John Arum Azi, has been released after spending about two weeks in the hands of kidnappers and has since returned to Jos for medical treatment.
Azi was abducted while travelling from Jos, and was later moved through different locations, including Kaduna and Zamfara States, while in captivity.
A disturbing video of him being tortured by his abductors had earlier circulated online, sparking widespread reactions and fears about his safety.
His family confirmed that he was finally released on Wednesday night and has been admitted to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for treatment.
His elder brother, Bulus Azi, said the student was already in Zaria for a job opportunity when he was kidnapped on his way to meet a contact.
According to him, negotiations were ongoing with the kidnappers throughout the period of captivity, with ransom payments made at different stages.
He said the initial demand was ₦6 million, but it later increased to ₦15 million after the kidnappers saw online fundraising efforts. The family eventually paid about ₦10.3 million before Azi was released.
Bulus explained that Azi and another abductee were moved on motorcycles from Zamfara to Zaria after the ransom was paid.
He added that the other victim, a Muslim boy from Toro in Bauchi State, contacted his family after arrival, and both were taken to hospital for treatment.
He said Azi arrived in Jos around 10pm and was immediately rushed to JUTH, noting that he sustained injuries and visible marks from beatings during captivity.
He also said the family had earlier reported the case to the police and contacted the DSS, though security agencies only fully engaged after the incident gained public attention online.
The family confirmed that Azi is currently receiving medical care and recovering from the trauma.
