Afrobeat singer Made Kuti has explained why he chose not to kneel while proposing to his wife, Inedoye Onyenso.

Speaking during a recent episode of the Timeless Podcast aired on Nix Network’s YouTube channel, the Grammy-nominated artiste said he believes marriage should be a mutual decision between two people and not an act of begging.

According to him, he and his wife agreed together to spend their lives with each other, which was why he did not feel the need to go down on one knee during the proposal.

“I did not go down on my knees when proposing to my wife because I told her it was a mutual decision. We are not begging each other to be with each other,” he said.

Made Kuti, who is the son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, got married to Inedoye Onyenso in a private ceremony held in Lagos in November 2023.

The singer also disclosed during the interview that his wife was once his “school daughter.”

In 2025, Made Kuti reacted strongly to criticism from some people who attacked his marriage because his wife is Igbo while he is Yoruba.

At the time, the singer described ethnic discrimination and tribal sentiments as “slave mentality,” insisting that love and marriage should not be judged based on ethnic background.
