Why Some People Go Broke in Nigeria – M.I Explains

Nigerian rapper Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I, has shared insights on why many people, including celebrities, end up broke in Nigeria.

In a recent interview with Chude, M.I explained that living beyond one’s means to meet public expectations often leads to financial trouble. He said he trained himself mentally to handle being “broke shamed” so that he wouldn’t feel pressured to constantly display wealth.

“When I understood that people in Nigeria tend to broke shame others, I had to decide whether to let that control me. If you let it, you’ll keep adjusting to meet their expectations, and that’s how people go broke,” he said.

M.I added that societal perception plays a huge role. “One of the things Nigerians are concerned about is how they are seen. Statistically, most people don’t have money. It took me time to accept being broke shamed. Many celebrities who were flying private jets 20 years ago are no longer affluent.”

He emphasized that financial prudence and resisting the pressure to constantly impress others are key to avoiding unnecessary financial strain.
