Nollywood actress Bukunmi Oluwasina has described the popular slogan “women supporting women” as a scam, claiming that true female solidarity rarely exists in the movie industry.
In an interview with BBC Pidgin, the actress and mother of one said that many women in Nollywood only show support publicly but fail to stand by one another when it truly matters.
According to her, most women are more willing to help men than their fellow women, noting that some would easily lend money to men to start businesses but hesitate to assist another woman in the same situation.
“I no blame anybody, but e just be like say women no too like support each other genuinely. For Nollywood, ‘women supporting women’ na scam. Even when e happen, e no dey last. We dey see am say women enemy most times na fellow woman,” she said.
Bukunmi also emphasized that the problem is not unique to Nollywood but common in many areas of society.
She noted that although there are women in the entertainment industry who have built their careers through hard work without any sponsors, their efforts are often overlooked because others hide behind their success and make it seem like every successful woman has a man funding her.
“Women dey for this industry wey no get sponsor, dem dey work hard and we dey see am. But some other people go use their names run things and make it look like all women for industry get sponsor. E no good,” she added.
Her remarks have sparked discussions online, with many agreeing that female support within Nollywood is often superficial and short-lived.
