Some of football’s most iconic trophies have been ranked among the most expensive in the world, reflecting both their material worth and historical importance.
A report by Vanguard highlights that these trophies are not only symbols of victory but also represent legacy and excellence in the sport. Many are made from precious materials such as gold and sterling silver, with values running into millions of dollars.
Leading the ranking is the FIFA World Cup trophy, which is estimated to be worth over $20 million. Designed by Silvio Gazzaniga and introduced in 1974, the trophy features two human figures holding up the Earth. Although its gold content is valued at about $600,000, its overall worth is driven by prestige and history. FIFA retains the original version, while winning teams receive a gold-plated replica.
The UEFA Champions League trophy follows, with an estimated value between $10 million and $13 million. Known as “Big Ears,” the silver trophy has been awarded since 1967. Its recognition across global football adds to its high valuation, despite the modest cost of its raw materials.
In third place is the Premier League trophy, valued between $3 million and $5 million. Introduced in 1992, it combines sterling silver with gold plating and features a malachite base. Crafted by Asprey of London, two identical versions exist, one for official presentation and another for backup and promotional purposes.
The Ballon d’Or, awarded annually to the world’s best player, is also among the most valuable prizes. Its estimated worth ranges from $500,000 to $3 million. Although it is made from gold-plated brass, its prestige makes it highly sought after. Players such as Lionel Messi have contributed to its global status through multiple wins.
The FA Cup trophy, valued between $1 million and $2 million, remains one of the oldest prizes in football. The competition dates back to 1871, and the current trophy was produced by Thomas Lyte after earlier versions were replaced.
South America’s Copa Libertadores trophy is estimated to be worth between $800,000 and $1.5 million. The silver prize, finished with gold plating, carries engravings that honour historical figures such as Simón Bolívar. It has been awarded since 1960.
The UEFA European Championship trophy, also known as the Henri Delaunay Cup, has a value of about $1 million to $2 million. First introduced in 1960 and redesigned in 2006, it includes engravings of past winners.
Germany’s Bundesliga Meisterschale completes the list, with an estimated value of $500,000 to $800,000. Unlike traditional cup designs, it is a large silver shield that features the names of champions dating back to 1903, with Bayern Munich appearing most frequently.
The report shows that while the materials used in these trophies contribute to their cost, their true value is shaped by history, prestige, and the achievements they represent in world football.
