Federico Valverde will miss Real Madrid’s upcoming La Liga fixture against Mallorca after the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed a one‑match suspension. The ruling follows his red card in the Madrid derby, despite the club’s attempt to overturn the decision. Valverde will be available again for the clash with Girona, but must serve the ban immediately.
The incident occurred in the 77th minute of the derby against Atletico Madrid, with the score at 3-2. Referee Munuera Montero dismissed Valverde for a heavy challenge on Alex Baena. His official report described the offense as “kicking an opponent, without being at a distance to be played, using excessive force.” Real Madrid argued the tackle was aimed at the ball and therefore should not have been classified as violent conduct. However, the Disciplinary Committee upheld the referee’s account, noting that video evidence did not disprove the presumption of accuracy attached to the match report.
Madrid’s appeal focused on the wording of the referee’s explanation, claiming the ball was within playing distance. The committee rejected this argument, ruling that no manifest error had been demonstrated. As a result, Valverde received the minimum sanction of one match, which is standard for such offenses.
The midfielder is currently away on international duty with Uruguay, featuring in friendlies against England and Algeria. He will return to Spain in time to serve his suspension against Mallorca on April 4. Crucially, the ban applies only to domestic competition, meaning Valverde remains eligible for the Champions League quarter‑final first leg against Bayern Munich on April 7. He will then resume league action against Girona on April 10.
For manager Alvaro Arbeloa, the absence is a significant setback. Valverde has been Madrid’s most heavily used outfield player this season, accumulating 3,528 minutes across 42 appearances. His recent form has been outstanding, with six goals in his last five matches. Losing him, even for one game, disrupts the rhythm of a player who has become central to Madrid’s midfield balance and attacking momentum.
Madrid have indicated they may continue to pursue further appeals, though prospects of success appear slim given the committee’s firm stance. The suspension halts Valverde’s impressive run but offers him a brief rest before a crucial period in both domestic and European competitions.
