Kabiru Turaki, the newly elected chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has pledged to bring an end to impunity and restore internal discipline within the party. In a statement made shortly after his election, Turaki emphasized his commitment to bringing the party back to its grassroots members, promising a more accountable and unified leadership going forward.
Turaki, who previously served as Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, was elected during the party’s national convention held on Saturday at the Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. He won the election with 1,516 votes, a decisive margin that reflected widespread support for his leadership bid.
The convention, which was attended by party members from across the country, marked a new chapter for the PDP as it seeks to regain momentum and rebuild its credibility. Turaki’s victory signals a shift in leadership as the party faces the challenge of revitalizing its structure ahead of future elections.
In his acceptance speech, Turaki vowed to address the internal divisions that have plagued the party in recent years. He emphasized that under his leadership, no one would be above the rules, and impunity would no longer be tolerated. He also promised to restore discipline and unity within the party, focusing on strengthening the bond between the PDP’s leadership and its members across all levels.
“Today, we take a step towards ensuring that our party becomes a true reflection of the will and aspirations of our people. The time for impunity is over. We are committed to building a PDP that is transparent, accountable, and disciplined,” Turaki said.
Political analysts have praised Turaki’s election as a step toward healing the party’s fractured image. The PDP, which once dominated Nigerian politics, has faced significant challenges in recent years, including leadership crises, defections, and public infighting. As the party prepares for future political battles, Turaki’s leadership will be tested in terms of how effectively he can steer the PDP back to prominence.
Party stalwarts and supporters have expressed optimism that Turaki’s tenure could bring stability and coherence to a party that has struggled with internal conflict and electoral setbacks.
The PDP’s national convention, which took place in a vibrant atmosphere at the Adamasingba Stadium, was seen as a significant event in the party’s roadmap for rebranding and renewing its political fortunes. With Turaki at the helm, all eyes will now be on how he navigates the challenges of reuniting the party and addressing its internal issues.
As the new chairman prepares to take charge, many are watching closely to see if the PDP can regain its position as a dominant political force in Nigeria.
