Duke of Sussex: “We must confront this hate.”

Prince Harry has voiced concerns about an increase in anti-Jewish attacks in the UK, encouraging people to distinguish legitimate political protest from hatred toward Jewish communities.

Prince Harry Breaks Silence on UK Antisemitism Crisis
Prince Harry has warned that the UK is seeing a growing amount of antisemitism, calling it a trend that is causing considerable concern and harming the nation’s social cohesiveness.
In an op-ed published in The New Statesman on Thursday, the Duke of Sussex characterized the UK as a “divided kingdom” and said that individuals must make a distinction between the act of protesting the behavior of foreign states and that of singling out Jewish people in Britain.
This is one of Prince Harry’s more direct comments about an issue pertaining to domestic policy in the UK since he and Meghan stopped carrying out royal duties, and his remarks come at a time when the UK’s Jewish community is facing increased tensions.

Surge of Antisemitic Attacks Across Britain
Harry’s warning was not theoretical. He cited incidents of lethal violence that have troubled Jewish communities throughout the UK in London and Manchester.
Two Jewish worshippers were murdered in a shooting at a synagogue in Manchester in October. In north London, the previous month, two Jewish men were stabbed in the middle of the day. The attack had occurred after the Jewish community in London had already expressed shock about a series of anti-Jewish incidents targeting synagogues and Jewish organizations.
The increase in these attacks has spurred debate in the UK over the relationship between public protest, especially following the war in Gaza, and a rise in crimes fueled by hatred of Jewish people.

Protest and Prejudice Are Being “Dangerously Conflated.”
At the core of Harry’s piece is the argument that a false equation has begun to take hold in the minds of the public.
Without mentioning Israel by name, Harry conceded that he was deeply disturbed by images from Lebanon, Gaza, and the rest of the region — images that show “destroyed communities and villages and towns reduced to rubble.” He mentioned nations whose actions are “raising serious questions under international humanitarian law.”
He was equally emphatic, however, that the grief and indignation provoked by such images cannot serve as an excuse for directing outrage toward British Jewish communities.
“When anger is turned toward communities — whether Jewish, Muslim, or any other — it ceases to be a call for justice and becomes something far more corrosive,” Harry stated.
He argued that this confusion of these two circumstances — rightful protest and an increasing volume of hate crimes — was leading to “a more dangerous and less just Britain.”

“We Cannot Answer Injustice With More Injustice”
The most impactful point in Harry’s op-ed was the explicit rejection of retribution.
“We cannot answer injustice with more injustice,” he wrote. “If we do, we don’t end the cycle, we extend it. The only way to break it is to refuse to pass it on.”
He declared that the UK needed to take an unequivocal stance against antisemitism and at the same time state clearly that hate crimes against Muslims and racism are born from the same deep-seated divisions as antisemitism. This statement was intended to create unity among groups rather than conflict between them.
Prince Harry did not shy away from his own previous mis-judgements, referencing a now-infamous photo from 2005 in which he is wearing a Nazi costume. He was publicly shamed for the photo, and previously stated he regretted it.

Gaza, Worldwide Protests and a Rise in UK Hate Crimes
The number of anti-Jewish incidents in the UK has increased significantly since the start of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The crisis began following a terrorist attack by Hamas against Israeli civilians in October 2023.
Since the conflict escalated, Britain has been the scene of widespread demonstrations, as have numerous other countries. The UN’s independent inquiry into the situation in the West Bank and Gaza concluded last September that the atrocities committed by Israel in Gaza amount to genocide. This ruling has amplified international criticism of Israel and critics suggest that it has fanned the flames for a more charged atmosphere toward British Jewish communities.
The Duke of Sussex’s op-ed appears to be an attempt to convey these two points simultaneously — to express empathy for the suffering in Gaza while strongly rebuking the claim that antisemitism can be excused on that account.

Prince Harry’s Growing Influence in Politics
Since stepping back from official royal duties along with his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry has been noticeably more vocal about causes he believes in.
The British royal family has traditionally shied away from direct political stances. Still, Prince Harry and Meghan now have much more leeway to speak publicly on issues that concern them, and Thursday’s op-ed may be Harry’s most pointed comment to date on an issue affecting the country he now lives in.
It remains to be seen whether this article will influence public opinion. However, at a time when Britain’s Jewish community is facing a very real and growing security threat, Prince Harry’s decision to use his platform to openly acknowledge the problem is significant in itself.
